Presentation Description: As energy infrastructure projects become increasingly more prevalent, so to does community interest – and opposition – in utility activities. From power generation to transmission and distribution projects, engaging with the public – and especially those who may oppose utility projects is critical. It can be challenging to maintain a calm, professional demeanor when confronted by an angry customer. This discussion will explore the approaches utility companies may take when proposing new projects in communities which may be opposed to them. It will touch on topics such as how to navigate around forces outside of a utility’s control, such as industry growth in an area; early and proactive engagement with advocacy organizations and local stakeholders; working with local governments to address potential issues before they become problems; and how utility staff can listen with empathy and remain non-reactive during uncomfortable confrontations.
By tackling challenging issues head on – like working in environmental justice communities to dealing with areas experiencing utility fatigue – energy companies can bring opposing forces along on the journey from negative to neutral – and sometimes even positive.
