Dr. Karen Voltura is a wildlife biologist working for Colorado Parks and Wildlife as the Regional Energy Liaison for Southeastern Colorado. She coordinates with industry, federal and local agencies, and CPW biologists on energy development projects to assess impacts to wildlife and habitat. Karen also works with the statewide team of energy specialists on renewable energy development including assessment of best management practices, cumulative impacts to wildlife, and mitigation strategies for wind and solar energy projects. Karen is a member of the Energy and Wildlife Policy Committee for the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) and is co-chair of the AFWA Wind-Wildlife Working Group. Prior to joining CPW, Karen served as program manager for Environmental Applications at DeTect, Inc. managing avian radar and remote sensing applications for renewable energy and environmental research. Before concentrating on risk assessment and wildlife interactions for energy projects, Karen’s focus was wildlife and aviation safety. Projects for the US Air Force included studies on wintering populations of snow geese, predicting large-scale migratory movements, and the use of radar technologies in the prevention of bird strikes with aircraft. She earned her B.S. from the University of Notre Dame and her PhD from the University of Oklahoma specializing in the behavioral ecology of birds.
