Daniel Riser-Espinoza (he/him/his) is a Senior Statistician based out of WEST’s Fort Collins, Colorado, office. He specializes in the design and analysis of wildlife and other natural resource studies at renewable energy facilities. Daniel has extensive experience working at the nexus of industry, government, and a variety of other stakeholders, having designed and analyzed monitoring studies at over 100 wind and utility-scale solar energy facilities. He has expertise in the implementation of modern fatality estimators, including the Generalized Estimator of Mortality (GenEst), and Evidence of Absence (EoA) models. Daniel has used EoA to design and analyze numerous studies measuring impacts to rare and/or sensitive species (e.g., Indiana bat, golden eagle) in the context of habitat conservation plans and eagle take permits. In addition to project work he is active in numerous research efforts at WEST, including models to account for unsearched area under wind turbines, efficient monitoring for eagles and large raptors, and understanding the effects of solar energy facilities on wildlife. Daniel has been at the forefront of studies to understand natural resource impacts from utility-scale solar development, including the design and analysis of efficient post-construction monitoring studies, developing avian risk models, conducting meta-analysis to understand broader trends, and field studies to understand drivers of wildlife impacts.
